So I’m a Freelance Photographer as well as a Production Runner. I decided to pursue a career in the creative industry after studying Film and Moving Image at university. The one question that keeps getting asked is “Can you survive being a Freelancer? my answer is yes.

To begin with I found it hard, you will always have competition out there looking for the next gig, it’s all about knowing where to look and standing out.

My first year of business wasn’t great in fact I made a loss until my third year because I had to buy new camera equipment Learn ways to reach your target audience on social media platforms, invest in a website and equipment you may need. Something I found that helped me was networking, talking to others in the industry and learning from them.

I’ve made a list of useful things below to get you started.

  1. Research into similar freelances and what they offer.
  2. Network with people, join local groups.
  3. Build up a portfolio.
  4. Advertise
  5. Build your brand and website.
